On Courage, Creativity, and Camp Firefly

On Courage, Creativity, and Camp Firefly

I've always believed that scent is one of the most powerful forms of storytelling.

A single fragrance can transport you somewhere before you even realize what's happening. Suddenly you're standing in your grandmother's kitchen, walking through a pine forest after rain, or remembering a summer afternoon you hadn't thought about in years.

Since the start, that's how I've approached every collection I've created. Each fragrance has always been a story first.

But this year, I found myself asking a different question.

What if I don’t stop at the scent? What if I built an entire world around it?

That tiny question slowly grew into what eventually became Camp Firefly.

I wanted to create something that felt like opening the pages of a favorite storybook. Not something to rush through, but something to return to throughout the month. A little place to escape to after long days, where self-care feels less like another task on your to-do list and more like permission to slow down for a while.

The very first thing I imagined wasn't the products.

It was a little field mouse.

Shy.

Quiet.

Scared.

The kind who hangs back at the edge of the group, wondering if everyone else already knows exactly where they belong.

I think we've all been Pip at some point in our lives.

Starting a new job.

Walking into a classroom.

Moving to a new town.

Introducing ourselves to strangers.

Trying something we've never done before.

So many of us grow up believing bravery is something you're either born with or you're not.

But I don't think that's true. I think courage is much quieter than that.

It's introducing yourself first.

Raising your hand.

Trying again after failing.

Choosing kindness.

Taking one small step, even when your knees are shaking.

That's the story I wanted Pip to discover. And maybe, the story I needed to hear again myself.

Once the story began to take shape, the artwork naturally followed. Every illustration inside Camp Firefly was drawn by hand, one image at a time. Truthfully, sharing my artwork was the part that scared me most...

I'm not a professionally trained illustrator. The last formal art class I took was in the sixth grade, and for years I convinced myself that meant I shouldn't even try. But creativity has a funny way of refusing to stay quiet.

So I stopped worrying about whether every line was perfect and started focusing on whether each illustration felt honest.

I wanted them to feel warm.

Whimsical.

A little nostalgic.

Like the illustrations tucked inside the storybooks I loved as a child.

As I finished each page, Camp Firefly slowly became more than a story. It became a place. A place with towering pines, toadstool mushrooms, glowing lanterns, crackling campfires, woodland friends, and tiny moments of courage.

And that's my favorite part of creating these collections. Watching something that once existed only in my imagination slowly become something you can hold in your hands.

This is only the beginning.

Camp Firefly is the first destination in a new series of monthly story worlds. Every collection will bring a new place to explore, a new story to read, new illustrations to discover, and a new fragrance designed to bring that world to life.

More than anything, I hope these stories become a reason to slow down.

To make yourself a cup of tea.

Light a candle.

Run a warm bath.

Read a chapter.

Color a page.

Journal for a few quiet minutes.

To remember that wonder isn't something we leave behind when we grow up. Sometimes it’s simply waiting for us to make room for it again.

Welcome to Camp Firefly.

I hope you'll stay awhile.
